General Insurance
Car Insurance policies are usually valid for a year and at annual renewal it is a great idea to shop around for the best quote, an excellent way of saving money. The best way of doing this is by searching online.
Factors that will influence your insurance cost, include:
- How long you’ve had you British driving licence*
- How long you’ve been accident free, more commonly referred to as your "no claims bonus"
- Your age
- The type of car; age, make, model, etc.
* If you have a foreign driving licence, we recommend that you exchange it for a British driving licence. This will help reduce your monthly premium and can be done with little effort at your local DVLA office. To find out if your licence qualifies for conversion visit the Direct Gov website.
There are three types of car insurance as detailed below:
- Third party - This is the minimum cover required to be legal. It insures against damage and injuries that you, or your passenger, cause to another person or their property in an accident. It doesn't pay for any damage or injury to you or your car.
- Third party, fire and theft - This is the same as third party cover, but it will also pay to repair or replace your car if it's stolen or if it's damaged or destroyed by fire.
- Comprehensive - This extends third party, fire and theft insurance to cover damages to your own car in the event of an accident that is your fault. Third party or third party, fire and theft policies don't cover this.
